 ::    Rural Entrepreneurship Graduate Teaching Assistantship Established at Texas A&M ::
Shirley and Joe Swinbank have established an assistantship in their name to support graduate students in the department of agricultural economics at Texas A&M University. The Shirley and Joe Swinbank '74 Rural Entrepreneurship Graduate Teaching Assistantship will be used to offset expenses for a graduate student assisting with rural entrepreneurship classes and maintaining the rural entrepreneurship website. In establishing the assistantship, they hope ''Aggies receive inspiration to dream, create, research and implement their own ideas and hopefully start their own businesses.''

 ::    Department Doctoral Student Awarded First Place at Pathways Student Research Symposium ::
Congratulations to Tatevik Zohrabyan on a first place award in the doctoral student category at the Pathways Student Research Symposium held at Texas A&M University, Commerce November 7 and 8, 2008. Tatevik's poster presentation was titled, ''Interdependence of Oil Prices and Stock Market Indices: A Copula Approach.''

 ::    Department Graduate Student Selected to Receive SAEA Outstanding Master's Thesis Award ::
Brian N. Mwanamambo has been selected to receive the 2008 SAEA Outstanding Master's Thesis Award for his thesis entitled ''Financing Smallholder Agribusiness in Zambia: An Economic Analysis of the ZATAC Model.'' Mr. Mwanamambo will be presented with this award during the 2008 SAEA Annual Business meeting in Atlanta on February 2, 2009. Brian's committee chair was Dr. Victoria Salin.

 ::    Delmar And Lillian Deterling Establish Opportunity Award Scholarship ::
Delmar and Lillian Deterling have donated $25,000 to establish the Del and Lil Deterling Family Endowed Opportunity Award Scholarship to help freshmen pay for their education at Texas A&M. The four-year scholarship will be awarded based on academic achievement, extra-curricular activities, financial need and attending the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Del was a 1959 graduate of Texas A&M with two bachelor degrees, agricultural economics and agricultural journalism. After graduation he served as association editor for the Progressive Farmer Magazine, retiring after 37 years with the magazine. In 1992 Del was named the Agriculture Editor of the Year and, in 2001, received the Outstanding Alumnus for the College of Agriculture and Life Science.  ::    Agricultural Economics Department Ranked Among Top in U.S. ::
Texas A&M University's Department of Agricultural Economics has been ranked fourth in the U.S. among agricultural economics departments, according to Academic Analytics, a scholarly database service. The rankings, reported recently in the Chronicle of Higher Education, were based on a number of criteria, including journal publications and citations per faculty, books published and other scholarly activity. "We are extremely proud of this recognition which exemplifies the outstanding faculty, graduate education and research programs we have here at Texas A&M," said Dr. Nichols, department head.  ::    Park Named To Roy B. Davis Endowed Professorship In Agricultural Cooperation ::
John L. Park has been named to the endowed Roy B. Davis Professorship in Agricultural Cooperation. The endowment was created in 1971 to honor Roy B. Davis, general manager of the Plains Cooperative Oil Mill and long-time leader in agriculture and cooperative development in Texas. "The appointment of Dr. Park will continue a longstanding tradition of leadership in education and research, furthering Texas agriculture and beyond," said Tommy Engelke, executive vice president for the Texas Agricultural Cooperative Council.  ::    Department Alumni Inducted into Corps Hall of Honor ::
Mr. Bill E. Carter, Class of '69 will be inducted into the Corps Hall of Honor at a ceremony on February 7. With a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Economics, he began his financial services career as a planner with Financial Services Corporation in Dallas, has served on various boards and associations, and is currently the president of Carter Financial Management. The Corps Hall of Honor was established in 1993 to pay tribute to former students of the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets who have lived a life that exemplifies the Aggie Spirit.

 ::    Department Students Win Third Consecutive Academic Quiz Bowl National Title ::
The Department's academic quiz bowl team recently won its third consecutive national title in Orlando, Fla., at the American Agricultural Economics Association conference. The team went undefeated, competing against the University of Nebraska in the final round to bring home the national title. This win was Texas A&M's sixth national title since 1990. Team members included Robert Withers, John Winkelmann, Shauna Yow, Casey Munn, Matt Colvin, and James Boer. The coaches of the team are Jim Mjelde, Eric Manthei, and Fred Boadu.

The Borlaug Institute and the Department of Agricultural Economics will present “The Green Revolution Revisited: 60 Years Later” by speaker Dr. Gamini Herath of Deakin University in Australia. The Department's Bruce McCarl has been promoted to the rank of Distinguished Professor. Also, David Anderson is now serving under the title of Professor and Extension Specialist. Finally, Jay Yates, working out of the Lubbock Center, as achieved the rank of Extension Program Specialist II, the highest rank for extension faculty.

 ::    Texas A&M Ag Economics Alumni Honored ::
Six Texas A&M University former students from the department of agricultural economics have been inducted into the Tyrus R. Timm Honor Registry. The registry is the highest department-level honor, and inductees were recognized following Texas Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples' keynote speech April 30 at the Veranda in Bryan. 'We are extremely proud of these latest inductees,' said John P. Nichols, department head. Matt Okeson was recently named an Undergraduate Research Scholar for the 2008-2009 school year. He will be studying climate change as it impacts Texas rivers. Dr. Fred Boadu will be serving as the faculty advisor with Dr. Bruce McCarl as consultant.

The Association of Former Students recognized Joe Outlaw with the Distinguished Achievement Award for Extension, Outreach, Continuing Education and Professional Development. Dr. Outlaw was presented with the award in a ceremony on April 29, 2008. The award included a framed certificate, an engraved watch, and a monetary award.

Emily Seawright recently received a water-related research project grant funded by The Texas Water Resource Institute (TWRI), along with 9 other graduate students from Texas A&M and The University of Texas at Austin. Seawright's advisors are Drs. Edward Rister and Ron Lacewell.

 ::    Rural Entrepreneurship, Energy Business Opportunities Part of Envision 08 Conference ::
Rural-based alternative energy opportunities, entrepreneurship and next-generation food start-up businesses will be part of the Envision08 Conference scheduled for April 23-25 at the Marriott Rivercenter in downtown San Antonio. Conference registration includes all general sessions and workshops, all meals during conference hours, entertainment and networking sessions, and access to business development resources through the Texas A&M Center for New Ventures & Entrepreneurship.

Dr. John Nichols, Department Head of Agricultural Economics, said those who would benefit from attending the conference include key executives and decision-makers in entrepreneurial and high-growth companies, members of corporate and local government business development teams, including those in rural and semi-rural areas, consultants, advisors, and university faculty interested in entrepreneurship. The number of conference participants and rooms at the Marriott Rivercenter are limited. Participants are asked to register as soon as possible.  ::    Department Graduate appointed Vice Minister of Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in Korea ::
Hak Soo Jeong received his Master of Science f from the Department under the supervision of Dr. John Penson. Mr. Jeong was promoted to Vice Minister at the Ministry of Food, Agriculture, Foresty and Fisheries on March 1, 2008. He is the first Vice Minister under new Korean President, Lee Myung-Bak.

 ::    Dr. Teofilo Ozuna appointed Dean of the College of Business Administration at UT-PanAm ::
Dr. Teofilo Ozuna, a graduate and former faculty member of the Department, was appointed Dean of the College of Business Administration at The University of Texas - Pan American. The Society for Range Management (SRM) awarded Dr. Richard Connor the Oustanding Achievement Award at their 61st Annual Meeting in Louisville, Kentucky.
