AGEC Scholarship Information
last revised February 02, 2007
The Department of Agricultural Economics offers several scholarships each year, with the funds routinely split between the Fall and Spring semesters of the academic year. Over $40,000 of scholarships were awarded at the Undergraduate Spring Banquet in April, 2005 to Agribusiness and Agricultural Economics majors.
These scholarships are funded through several different sources, including, but not limited to: (1) former student contributions; (2) by family and friends memorializing a loved one; (3) former faculty; (4) from industry sources recognizing contributions made by a faculty member; (5) industry sources wanting to contribute to the development of the undergraduate students in this department; and (6) the Department's annual Scholarship Golf Tournament. Most contributions are made as an endowment, although in some instances, the scholarships are funded on an annual basis by the benefactor. The interest earned from endowments is the source of scholarship money awarded each year. The varying amounts of the initial endowments, and the year-to-year variation of interest rates, are the determinants of how much scholarship money is awarded each year.
The Selection Committee utilizes all of the information contained in the application form to rate and rank each application relative to those of other students. The criteria of greatest importance are: grades, financial need, and leadership potential. The minimum cumulative GPR requirement for Department of Agricultural Economics scholarship recipients is 2.50. Students are encouraged to actively participate in organizations of interest university-wide, college-wide and off-campus to gain leadership roles, however, the Scholarship Committee gives participation in departmental organizations (AAEA, NAMA, and FIRE) more weight in their rankings than those outside of the department. Students are provided an opportunity to demonstrate their financial need on the application form and this information, along with all other information provided by applicants, is handled on a confidential basis. Students' identities are removed from the materials viewed by the Selection Committee.
The criteria for each scholarship varies widely. From the grade point requirement, to career interest upon graduation, to being a resident of a particular area of the state, each scholarship's criteria is unique. The Selection Committee considers all applications and then allocates the various scholarships among those considered to be best qualified and most deserving. In the event no one qualifies for a scholarship in a particular year, the funds remain in the scholarship account to draw interest and to be awarded in a subsequent year.
